About Milan

General Information

Milan, New York, is a beautiful town located in Northern Dutchess County, New York, in the Hudson River Valley.  The area known as Milan today was established in 1818 and was originally part of the town of Northeast. The area was settled in the mid 1700's as part of the Little Nine Partners Patent of 1706.

It is believed the first settler was Johannes Rowe, the son of a Palantine immigrant who purchased 911 acres from Robert Livingston.

The population of Milan is approximately 2,400 according to the 2000 census. Milan is approximately 36 square miles. The local people recognize certain areas of Milan by different names but none are separate municipalities. These areas include Jackson Corners, Lafayetteville, Rock City and Shookville.
Milan has no town center and no post office. Residents of Milan travel to Rhinebeck or Milan for most services including grocery shopping, banking, the post office, going to the movies, dining out or other general business activities.

Milan is about 65 miles south of Albany (the state capital), 47 miles from Danbury, Connecticut, and 85 miles from New York City. Milan borders the Taconic State Parkway and is therefore easily reached from New York City and many weekenders make Milan the location for their country home.

Schools
Milan is served by 3 separate school districts determined on the address of the property. The school districts are Milan Central, Rhinebeck Central and Pine Plains Central.

Government

Milan has a Town Government and it is managed by the Town Supervisor.

Things to Do

Milan is home to Wilcox State Park, a wonderful county facility with swimming, picnicking and hiking. The town also has a town recreational park which hosts local baseball games and community events.

All of the attractions of both Rhinebeck and Milan are just a few minutes drive from Milan. To read about these attractions visit the Rhinebeck and Milan pages on this website.

Housing

Milan offers a mix of homes including homes from the 1800's, 1900's and even new construction. Many of the homes in Milan sit on parcels of land that are larger than 3 acres. The rural nature of Milan is important to its residents and they work hard to maintain the rural feel.

Newspapers

The local newspapers are:

  • Gazette Advertiser
  • Kingston Freeman
  • Poughkeepsie Journal
  • Register Star

Airports
Milan is serviced by the 3 major New York City airports in addition to 3 regional airports. Albany International Airport in Albany, Stewart Airport in Newburgh and Westchester County Airport in White Plain

Weather
The Milan area has four distinct seasons all with their own appeal. Spring and summer bring lush green foliage to our mountains and farmlands and the river beckon boaters to enjoy the scenery. In the fall the Hudson Valley is a blaze of color and in winter our moderate snowfall is wonderful for sledding locally or skiing and snowboarding in the nearby Catskill and Berkshire mountains.

Surrounding Towns
Milan is surrounded by many other beautiful towns all with their own unique personalities. They are: Rhinebeck, Red Hook, Hyde Park, Germantown, Staatsburg, Pine Plains, Clermont and Stanford. The major shopping centers are located in Kingston and Poughkeepsie.
