About Fishkill
The town of Fishkill was created in 1788 and originally included the now independent LaGrange and East Fishkill regions. Two merchant Dutchmen, Frances Rombout and Gulian Verplanck, for the purpose of fur trading, purchased the area from the Wappinger Indians.
With a population of around 21,000, Fishkill has an older population with a median age of 47.7 years old. This is significantly higher than the state median of 35.9. If you’re looking for either a quiet place to retire or a place to start a family, Fishkill could be right for you.
As part of the Hudson Valley Region, Fishkill can boast of some of the most beautiful landscapes that you will find in the area. The village is set in a valley, while the surrounding hamlets all scale up the hills sides. Nearby is the Hudson River, which provides ample opportunities for recreation and sporting events in and along the water.
Fishkill contains residents of several European countries, many of which came from Italy or Ireland, though the percentage of foreign born residents is still significantly below the national average, being 9% to New York’s 20%. There is certainly not as much diversity as you would find in larger cities in the area, but what is there is well represented within the town’s culture.
Fishkill does host some exciting community events for those living in or visiting the region. It is home to Splashdown Park, a family-oriented water theme park open throughout the summer months, and Dutchess Stadium, home of the Hudson Valley Renegades.
Those looking to move to the Fishkill area will be happy to know that the crime rate is far below the state average, with nearly no reported major crimes in the last couple of years. The median home value in the area is just slightly above New York State’s average, making it a safe and affordable place for most people looking to start out in a beautiful community based town.
